Microsoft is going to give out dev tools for free to students

I just saw on cnet news article tonight that Bill Gates is going to announce at Stanford on Tuesday, Feb. 19th that Microsoft will give away dev tools to college students and then high school students. This is not just visual studio, but expression studio and even server 2003 and SQL dev edition. Wow that is very cool and could help the shortage we have in developers in the U.S.

This will change a lot in colleges across the world as the cost entry into learning and creating new .NET web applications and desktop apps just got very cheap and easier. This will be very exciting to see the new apps that come out.

This will finally allow students not enrolled in tech fields to "fiddle" with software using great tools.
A real enabler for the enthusiast students.

Many schools use Java and free C++ compilers now because some versions and some tools are freely available. This will be nice as it will lower the barrier to entry for Microsoft technologies in schools as well. It will give students more marketable skills (Java *and* C#, for example, and access to a very common database - SQL Server)

While many ABM people will likely point to this as Microsoft trying to take over another space, I think it's really good for some equal representation in education.
